The Problem With Leaving Stumps

Why Stump Removal Is Worth the Investment

After a tree is removed, the remaining stump often gets treated as a low priority. However, leaving a stump in place creates a growing list of problems that become more significant and more costly to address as time passes.

Decaying stumps become habitat for wood-boring insects including termites and carpenter ants, which can migrate to your home, deck, or outbuildings. The root system continues to decompose underground, creating depressions in your lawn that sink as soil fills the voids. Stump sprouts, vigorous new shoots emerging from the root system, can regrow aggressively and require repeated removal if the stump is left in place.

A1 Tree Service eliminates stumps completely in Arcanum, OH using professional-grade grinding equipment that reduces stumps and roots to fine wood chips several inches below the soil surface. This allows the area to be replanted, landscaped, paved, or built over without any future interference.

🐜

Eliminates Pest Habitat

Rotting wood is a prime target for termites, carpenter ants, and wood beetles. Complete stump grinding removes this attraction point before infestations develop.

🌱

Prevents Stump Sprouting

Root systems of many species produce vigorous sprouts after the trunk is removed. Grinding below the root crown disrupts this regrowth cycle.

⚠️

Removes Tripping Hazards

Stumps at ground level are a leading cause of lawn mower damage and a serious tripping hazard for children and adults alike.

🏡

Restores Usable Yard Space

Once ground out, the area can be seeded, sodded, planted, or developed, giving you back full use of your property.

Our Process

How Stump Grinding Works

Site Preparation

We locate subterranean utilities, remove any boulders or debris from the stump, then set up the grinder for the best possible access and security.

Below-Grade Grinding

Our commercial grinder produces fine wood chip material throughout by reducing the stump and root crown 8–12 inches below soil level.

Root Grinding (Optional)

Major lateral roots can be traced and ground for complete root removal, which will stop future sprouting and settling caused by decomposition.

Fill and Cleanup

You can either completely remove the wood chip mulch or mix it back in. If asked, we rake the area clean and fill the cavity with topsoil.

Frequently Asked Questions

Stump Grinding FAQ

How deep does A1 Tree Service grind stumps?

Our standard stump grinding removes the stump and root crown to a depth of 8 to 12 inches below the existing soil surface. This depth is sufficient for lawn restoration, new planting, and most landscaping purposes. For construction projects, paving, or situations where major roots need to be eliminated to prevent settling or sprouting, we offer extended grinding and selective root tracing to achieve a cleaner result.

What do you do with the wood chips left after grinding?

The wood chip mulch produced by stump grinding can be handled in several ways depending on your preference. Many property owners choose to spread the chips across garden beds as a mulch layer, which provides moisture retention and gradual nutrient return to the soil as it decomposes. If you prefer a completely clean finish, we can remove all chip material and fill the resulting cavity with topsoil, leaving a level surface ready for seeding, sodding, or construction.

Will the stump grow back after grinding?

When we grind a stump to our standard below-grade depth of 8 to 12 inches, the likelihood of regrowth is very low. The grinding process destroys the root crown, which is the primary origin point of stump sprouts. Some species with particularly vigorous root systems may still produce a few sprouts from lateral roots, but without the crown intact, these are typically weak and easily managed. For clients concerned about any residual sprouting, our optional root grinding service addresses the major lateral roots as well.
